Headteacher's Blog - 06.07.2025

Several school trips have taken place during the last couple of weeks, at Coppetts Wood. Our reception class had fun meeting the animals at Belmont Farm; Year 1 made pizzas at Pizza Express; Year 3 learned about Judaism at our local Muswell Hill Synagogue; and Year 6 experienced a wartime classroom at the Royal Air Force Museum. These experiences are a great way to maintain pupils’ motivation towards their learning and encourage personal and social development. Such learning experiences outside of the classroom often create memories which stay with pupils for many years. We will continue to enhance our curriculum through trips and enrichment opportunities, next term.

Public Consultation on the draft Domestic Abuse (DA) and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy 2025-29 – get involved and share your views as part of this consultation which is open to all Barnet residents as well as people who visit or work in the borough. The draft strategy aims to: embed a public health approach to prevent DA & VAWG; ensure victims and survivors get the help they need; focus on holding perpetrators to account; and to increase feelings of safety in the borough.

At Coppetts Wood, we have been working hard to improve the quality of our PE curriculum and the range of opportunities for pupils to participate in regular, physical activity, through PE lessons; the range of after-school clubs we provide; and competitive team games and matches. Recently, pupils in Year 5 took part in the annual 5-a-side football tournament at Bishop Douglass School. They had great fun and impressed Mr Lopes and Miss French with how well they played.

Y5 Football Tournament

Year 4 girls took part in a recent football tournament and the boys enjoyed a friendly football match, last Thursday, at Coppetts Wood. Next Thursday, it is the turn of Year 6 who will also host a friendly match with a local school. We are very lucky with the sports field space that we have at Coppetts Wood and it is great to be putting it to good use. Mr Lopes hopes to arrange more football matches next term and to extend the school's participation in local leagues and competitions, in other sports.

With two weeks to go until the end of term, there is lots to fit in ahead of the summer holiday, including: Careers Day; our summer fair; transition to new classes; end of year reports; our Coppetts Wood art exhibition; welcoming new EYFS families; and saying a fond farewell to our Year 6 pupils. Coppetts Wood is going to be very busy!

This Friday is our Careers Day event. Any parents or carers willing to speak with pupils about the job that they do, please let the school office know by Wednesday. We hope that the day will inform and inspire pupils about the world of work and some of the careers and training opportunities available to them, in the future.

Sports days for pupils in KS1 and KS2 took place, last week, with pupils competing alongside and against each other, to earn valuable points for their houses. Pupils had great fun and showed competitive spirit in events such as the sack race, hurdles, egg and spoon race and javelin. We clearly have some very talented sporting stars of the future at Coppetts Wood! Thank you to Miss Ahsan and Mr Lopes for organising the events and to the families that turned out to help cheer-on the competitors. A special thank you to the staff, parents and carers who took to the start line to participate in the adult races which were excitedly cheered on, by pupils. Brilliant fun!

Unfortunately, rain managed to postpone sporting events last week for EYFS. We look forward to supporting our youngest children during their rescheduled sports days, on Tuesday.

Next Saturday, our summer fair takes place. The PTA has been busy organising the day, sorting through donations and planning to ensure that it is a successful event for our local community. Tomorrow, you will receive a letter providing more details about how to purchase raffle tickets, advance entry tokens and details of some of the stalls and activities on the day. We urgently need more parents and carers to support with the running of the fair. Whatever the amount of time you can spare on the day, between 1pm and 3pm next Saturday, would be greatly appreciated, to ensure that we can run all of the planned stalls. Please spread the word so that we can attract as many visitors as possible and help raise lots of money for our school.
