Headteacher's Blog - 13.06.2025

All pupils in Y1 took part in the phonics screening check this week, a statutory requirement to check that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an age appropriate standard. Miss Yesilyurt is very proud of how pupils in her class have been making good progress in using and applying their phonics and learning to read as well as how pupils performed in their screening check.

Also this week, pupils in Y4 have taken part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).  This statutory check is used to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently. Well done Y4, for putting in the hard work and effort to learn and practise your tables which are an important part of your future success in mathematics.

On Tuesday, our school was externally moderated by the borough of Barnet, to quality assure our teacher assessment in writing at KS2. This moderation is used to confirm that teacher assessment judgements for Y6 writing are accurate and consistent with national standards. I am pleased to confirm that the external moderators agreed with all of the teacher judgements, validating the accuracy of our assessment in writing in Y6, at Coppetts Wood.

Well done and thank you to Miss Ahsan, Miss Yesilyurt, Mrs Burke-Derby and Ms Omar for their hard work and preparation for these visits and checks.

On Thursday, pupils in Y5 and Y6 enjoyed an Experimental & Sensory Sound Work and Music Production workshop, provided by One-Click, at the ArtsDepot. The interactive sessions included discussion and experimentation with objects, to discover how smell, sight, touch and taste translate into sound. Each class collaborated as a group, to make and record a soundscape or song. Pupils had great fun and learned lots about how to arrange music and different sounds. Thank you to Lawrence, for visiting Coppetts Wood and leading these fantastic workshops.

On Friday, a group of Y4 pupils took part in a girls' football tournament. Mr Lopes was very proud of the performances and participation, both individually and as a team. He was also very impressed with how pupils grew in confidence during their first tournament. Two pupils even caught the eye of a club scout, impressed by their talents and skills. Well done team - I am looking forward to seeing you wearing your medals!

Next week, pupils in Y5 (and some in Y4) are taking part in the annual 5-a-side football tournament at Bishop Douglass School. They have been training hard and are keen to take part. Good luck children!

Our new look celebration assemblies have seen children across the school recognised for their fantastic achievements in reading, writing and maths. Our readers, authors and mathematicians of the week are fantastic role models for our school and fully deserve to be celebrated. We will be creating a gallery on our school website, to share photos of our trophy winners.

Sports days take place during the week beginning 30th June 2025. Pupils can wear t-shirts representing the colours of their school house: Bluebell – blue; Cherry tree – red; Highgate – green; Queens – yellow. More details to follow.

Coppetts Wood Primary School - Calendar

This week is Diabetes Week. Every year, around 200,000 people in England are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, a condition that can lead to serious health complications. 1 in 10 people in Barnet are at risk of developing diabetes. This diabetes week, Barnet residents are encouraged to take simple steps to reduce their risk of diabetes, by learning about the signs and symptoms and making small lifestyle changes to prevent it, such as eating well, moving more and managing your heart health.

There is a free Diabetes prevention event at the main atrium in Brent Cross Shopping Centre on Friday 20th June, 10am - 6pm. Learn more about type 2 diabetes and how to prevent it.

Visit yourhealthbarnet.org/diabetes-prevention to learn more about diabetes and find practical support.

In partnership with North London Waste Authority (NWLA), Barnet Council are hosting a Repair Café to help make your items last longer and reduce waste.

Bring along:

  • Child and adult bicycles needing a fix
  • Small electrical items (laptops, kitchen utensils, vacuum cleaners etc.)
  • Textiles in need of mending

As the weather hots up, please ensure that you send your child into school wearing sun cream, with a sun hat and a re-fillable water bottle. We will be mindful of how much time pupils spend outside during peak hours, when the sun is at its strongest, during break and PE sessions.

Countdown time, to the Coppetts Wood summer fair! Hopefully, you have Saturday 12th July 2025 already in your diary and are looking forward to coming together as a community, for this summer event. Please be aware that there have been some changes to the published information regarding times and pricing of the event. We can confirm that the fair will now run from 1.00 – 3.00pm, to allow sufficient time for the stalls to be set up on the Saturday morning. An entrance fee will now also be charged to all adult visitors: £1.00 paid in advance (details to follow) and £2.00 on the gate. School-aged children are free to attend.

The PTA are busy planning and organising to ensure that the event runs smoothly and raises lots of money for our school. They would love your help, to ensure the event’s success. Each week, in the run-up to the summer fair, they will be collecting stall items, as follows:

  • Next week (w/c June 16th) : Gently used or new books
  • Week 2 (w/c June 23rd) : Clothes (adults or children’s, including school uniform – in good condition)
  • Week 3 (w/c June 30th) : Toys + general donations (raffle items)
  • Week 4 (w/c July 7th) : General donations (raffle items - wine, chocolates, gift vouchers, etc.)

If you are able to contribute any items, there will be tables set up at the beginning and end of every day for donations. You can also send items in with your child or hand donations into the school office. Thank you for your support.

Enjoy your weekend.
