MUSIC

Intent

At Coppetts Wood Primary School, we aim to provide a Music curriculum that is accessible to all; develops a curiosity for, and enjoyment, in the subject. Children gain a firm understanding of what music is and develop their skills and knowledge through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing. They are exposed to a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres. We are committed to ensuring that children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences in a variety of contexts.

Implementation

Music is taught discretely across the school through weekly lessons, enhanced and supported by our digital music service, Charanga and the Barnet Music Service. ‘Charanga Musical School’ scheme of work supports all of the requirements of the National Curriculum and gives children access to a wide range of musical concepts and experiences. The learning within this scheme is based on: Listening and Appraising; Musical Activities - creating and exploring; and Singing and Performing. It provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school, from Early Years to Year 6. Lesson plans include opportunities for assessment, clear progression, and engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson.

In Year 3, the children learn to play the recorder through lessons which are delivered by a specialist teacher. The children learn basic notation and have the opportunity to share their skills through two performances to parents. The glockenspiel is used across the school as the tuned instrument to explore musical notation. Pupils are also encouraged to bring in their own tuned instrument to use in these lessons.  Music is also used by class teachers as a cross-curricular tool to support and enhance learning in other subject areas. Linking songs to other areas of the curriculum is encouraged, with a view to broadening pupil’s experiences.

Opportunities are given for children who learn an instrument to perform in the classroom, during assemblies and in school concerts. We also have a school choir which performs both in school, at community events and further afield. Year 2 take part in the annual Barnet Infant Music Festival. Year 4 take part in the KS2 Music Festival and have the opportunity to perform in a proper theatre with other schools. Children are offered the opportunity to learn the keyboard and guitar in lessons delivered by peripatetic teachers and paid for by parents.

Impact

Whilst at Coppetts Wood School, children have access to a varied programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. We hope children will learn to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose- either as listener, creator or performer. Through engaging musical experiences at school, we aim for children’s wider growth, particularly in relation to sense of achievement, self-esteem, self-awareness, and cooperation. Children will gain a deeper understanding of the validity and importance of all types of music, and respect for the role that music plays in different cultures and traditions from across the world.
