Main Clause = clause that MAKES SENSE on its own.

Subordinate Clause = clause that RELIES on a main clause to make sense.

 

A comma links a main and subordinate clause.

A dash links extra information (usually a subordinate clause). Can be used in embedded clauses instead of brackets () or commas.

A full stop separates two or more main clauses.

A semi colon also separates two or more main clauses.
